Calls to intensify investment in Climate Action in Africa at the 4th AAAP Partnership Forum
Nairobi, September 16, 2024 – At the 4th Africa Acceleration Adaptation Partnership Forum held at the Serena Hotel Nairobi, Kenya, called intensified investment efforts for Climate Action in Africa. The forum was organized by Global Centre on Adaptation and African Development Bank (AfDB).
Present during the meeting were representatives from the Government of Kenya, The Diplomatic Community, the community, innovators, and researchers.
Speaking at the official opening ceremony, the CEO, Global Center on Adaptation, and Chancellor of the University of Nairobi, Prof. Patrick Verkooijen, noted that the AAAP Program is the only program that has been addressing the continent’s climate action. This is the only programme that has invested and shaped 10B dollars for Africa. Through the 10B Dollars, 16M farmers in Africa are more resilient, 1M jobs have been created and over 60M people across Africa are more resilient.
Prof. Verkooijen called on the global leaders to keep investing in climate action in Africa.
During the Forum, Innovators FLIPS ORG, RoISUM & Apen Softwares were recognized and awarded for their ClimateAction efforts in partnership with C4DLab and the 50 youth that will undergo training under the youth academy were also announced.
PS Eng. Festus Ng’eno, Ministry of Environment, underscored the Government’s commitment on climate action and pledged to join hands with the community and all the other stakeholders working on adaptation efforts.
The Homabay Governor, Hon. Gladys Wanga painted the picture of the effects of climate change in Homa Bay County that threatens livelihoods. She implored for more awareness and innovative solutions that will help the farmers and local community of the county to increase food security and access to water and other resources.
The core team that has been implementing the AAAP program led by Prof. Daniel Olago, Institute of Climate Change, UoN, Prof. Faith Karanja, Geospatial and Space Engineering, UoN and GIS Expert, Dr. Sabina Nyoroka, took the participants through some of the milestones of the program this far. The roadmap, interventions and the plans for the next phase of the program.
Speakers cautioned Africa against its reactive nature to the effects but urged us to be proactive and innovative and secure our future by scaling adaptation efforts.
Among those who spoke were Dr. Kevin Kariuki, Vice president for Power, Climate and Green Growth, African Development Bank, French Ambassador to Kenya, H.E Arnaud Suquet, Deputy Head of Mission, Royal Norwegian Embassy in Kenya, H.E Geir Arne Schei among others.
